A brief Career Track written by Kwfong
Is he Jo In Seong or Zo In Sung or Jo In Sung or Cho In Sung or 조인성. By whatever name he is renowned, he is a humble, hardworking and talented Korean actor/model who has a lot of star appeal.
Jo In Sung burst into prominence in the Asian region through his role as Jang Jae Min, a good for nothing and selfish playboy who lived his life spending his chaebol father´s money and willing to live the farce of a chaebol arranged marriage if he could continue with his lifestyle…until he met “poor girl”, Lee Soo Jung (played by Ha Ji won) in Memories of Bali (aka What Happened in Bali, 발리에서 생긴 일) a 2004 Korean drama with an explosive ending. Looking at past Korean dramas written by the husband and wife team who wrote Memories of Bali, the male and female leads always have a Kang and a Lee surnames. However due to In Sung´s characterisation of Jae Min, he wrestled the leading actor role from the Kang In Wook character played by So Ji Sub. Jo In Sung won the best actor for his portrayal of Jang Jae Min in this drama at the Paeksang Awards for that year.
A Dirty Carnival(비열한 거리), a film directed by Yoo Ha, premiered in South Korea in June last year during the World Cup Soccer fever season and inspite of it, it was in the top 10 box office list. In this film, Jo In Sung acted as Kim Byung Doo, a low level gangster who wanted to climb the hierarchy of organized crime and was caught in the vicious web that he himself has created. He won the best leading actor for his protrayal of Kim Byung Doo in the 5th Korean Film Awards (2006), MBC’s answer to KBS’s Blue Dragon Awards.
Jo In Sung is again nominated for the Best Actor award in the upcoming The 44th Annual Daejong Film Festival for his role in A Dirty Carnival. A Dirty Carnival receives another nomination for the Best Picture award. The 44th Annual Daejong Film Festival will be held on 8th June 2007 at Sejong Center.
Jo In Sung took six months to prepare for the stunts and action sequences that he did without a stunt double in A Dirty Carnival. Looking at the many clips during the shooting of this film, it is not surprising as it would have been difficult to find a stunt double who is 186 cm in height for this actor who started his career as a model.
While in High School, Jo In Sung, a Taekwondo black belt, 2nd degree holder, desperately wanted a job as a Taekwondo coach to help meet his family´s living expenses when his father lost his job during the 1997-98 Asia financial crisis. He was injured during the competition for the Coaching job. While recovering from injury, one of his friends sent his resume to modeling agencies and he begun his modeling career at 18, taking public transport and doing his own makeup for the early modeling assignments. He has since come a long way with his own private posy of minders and being chauffeured driven to public events. However, he still hobnobs with his circle of friends from his neighbourhood in Cheon Ho district having lived there since the age of 3. After his success with A Dirty Carnival, a reporter pointedly asked him why has he not moved his parents to a better home in Gangnam, a district south of the Han River in Seoul city. He humbly replied that why should he moved to the swanky Gangnam when all his friends are living in his present neighbourhood. He does not want to waste time traveling everyday to meet up with his friends for drinks!
It is observed that he wishes to be regarded as a serious actor and has been very careful in selecting film and dramas. Especially since Jo In Sung´s subsequent outing after Memories in Bali, in the 2005 Korean Drama, Spring Day was rather forgettable. He rejected the offer to play Shin in the 2006´s very successful Goong aka Princess Hour. All his films prior to A Dirty Carnival were rather mediocre, i.e. Madeline, Love Impossible,
Early in his acting career after being a model, he was told that he would not be a successful actor because of his looks and his funny speaking voice. Hardwork, perseverance and constantly striving to improve himself, has made Jo In Sung in the top five most bankable actor in Chungmuro (South Korea´s equivalent to Hollywood) voted early this year by a group of 12 producers and PR executives who best know the actors’ commercial value as those in Korea who can helm a movie. His 5th ranking comes after veterans Song Kang Ho, Jang Dong Gun, Cho Seong Woo and fellow model turned actor, Kang Dong Won.
Jo In Sung was the male model who clocked in the highest value for Comerciales/TV ads (CFs) and print ads managed by Sidus in 2005.
